It's Houston Quilt Market Time!!

Good Morning... we are all up and waiting for the downstairs "breakfast area" to open so we can get some COFFEEEEEEE!!!!!  You know... I was going to bring some with me just in case the room didn't have enough for us this early in the a.m.  ……… but I thought... "No"... it's a great hotel and they are sure to have some.  NOT!!!  The room has this funky little pot with a little cassette...weird... and guess what... only ONE!  grrrrrrr…..  You know... you just don't mess with a girl and her morning coffee!!!

This morning we will be off to the Quilt Market for the first day with 3 people that have never been here before and that is soooooo exciting.  I remember my first trip to the quilt market years ago - my heart was pounding.... my knees were shaking.... and I didn't think I could take a deep breath!

We have Rhonda and Bruce Wilkerson from Scrappy Rooster - St. Marys, Georgia with us.  This is their first market and they asked if we come with them to show them the ins and outs.... Then our friend - Wynette (from Camp Blanding) came with us toooooo.  This has always been on her "bucket list" and she can  cross it off!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So.... my mission on this trip is multi... Be the best mentor I can be for Ronda & Bruce - AND find something wonderfully new - you know.... that ONE thing that takes your breath away... that you just get so excited about you can't wait to show it to everyone.   PLUS... Meet all of my quilting friends and colleagues that I've missed over the passed few years.

Here's a few sketches I've been working on....  If you were to see these sketches.... would you rather work them with wool applique?  Embroidery?  Or... may a combination of both?

Let me know your thoughts!!!

We'll be back with more news and hopefully some great photos from market!!!

They're HERE!!!

How happy I am that you are excited about our new "Queen Bee Thread Waxers" !  Some of you may have a puzzled look on your face... so let me explain!

One of the stitching "pet-peeves" I have while stitching is my thread!  Not the thread itself (I always the best threads) but how it behaves while I'm stitching.  It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using floss, sewing thread, pearl cotton, wool thread, silk thread.... mine was always twirling and twisting... knotting... fraying so much that it would literally separate.... grrrrrr!!

I decided to get to the bottom of it and here is what I discovered!

1.  I was NOT a good girl about cutting my thread when preparing to hand stitch (as in hand mending, sewing on a button, sewing on a quilt binding, putting a hem in ....).  If I forgot to have a pair of scissors with me - I would bite or break the thread! E-E-E-E-E-E-E-K-K-K-K-K.... (please don't judge my laziness).

2.  I swear I have NO FINGER PRINTS on my right hand fingers... I cannot grip a needle for anything.    Because of the bad gripping capability on my part, I would constantly be turning the needle for a better grip!  What happens then?  Yep... you guessed it... twirly needle means twisting thread!  You know the kind... you have to hang the needle (with the thread already in the eye) upside down and let the thread twirl back to normal.  So I discovered finger cots (more on those later).

3.  I thought it was better to have LLLOOONNNGGG thread... so I could sew more stitches and for a longer period of time.  NOT!  All it did was knot, twirl, and then split... it was like a magic trick... I'd be sewing along and then I wasn't!  The longer the thread - the more times you pull it through fabric - the weaker it becomes....until eventually it separates....e-e-e-e-e-e-k-k-k !!! Are any of you relating to my problems here?  I think I can envision some heads going up and down in a "yes" fashion... am I correct?

4.  My needle was always coming unthreaded.   g-g-g-r-r-r-r-r-r-r!

5.  I was NOT using the correct needle for the type of stitching.

Well... this long story led me to some investigating to resolve my stitching issues.  Here's what I discovered....

My thread was NOT being cut properly from the spool.

I couldn't grip my needle well - very frustrating!

I was sewing with a piece of thread...WAY TO LONG!

All is now resolved... I've placed a pair of small scissors in every project bag that I'm currently working on.  I also have finger cots in each one!  I've learned to have my thread length between 18" - 24" (or the size of your arm from your elbow to your finger tips) and I have made -

Queen Bee Thread Wax Conditioners

They are now on our website  Olde Green Cupboard Designs

Look to the right of the main screen and you'll see Bee's Wax Thread Conditioner.  Click on this link and pick out your favorite!!!

They are all handmade (with real bee wax) and will ship to you in a sweet little muslin bag which is great for storage.  While you're on the website ordering, be sure to read the instructions on how to use your Queen's Waxer to condition your thread from fraying, knots, twisting, and separation.

Queen's Guard

Queen's Court

Queen's Garden

Queen's Nectar

Queen's Crown

Queen's Silver Heart
These are so special for all of your friends that sew as special gifts and don't forget your secret sister.  If you have any "special" charms that you would like to use on your was conditioner, please contact me and we'll see if we can substitute yours for the ones we are currently using.

p.s.  Don't forget Christmas is just around the corner....
Have fun stitching!

Please remember... if this is your first visit to Camp Blanding to adhere to the speed limits, wear your seat belt, NO TALKING ON THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING.

Bring your food, snacks, drinks (we provide coffee), ironing station, projects, sewing supplies, SWEATER, don't forget to double check - sewing cord and foot pedal (I can't even begin to tell you how many of us have forgotten ours....), Driver's License or government picture identification card.

Lodging Keys:  Pick up at the Armory Building - enter at the back right side of the building (double doors) at 3:00 p.m.  on Thursday.  Then you'll have time to get set up in your lodging and then return to the Armory at 5:00 pm to set up for lodging.  I do apologize that you have to wait in line outside until 5:00 pm in the heat.  However, the offices are open and the Armory staff is still working until that time.  We can get pretty loud during setup so they've asked us to wait until the majority of the soldiers have finished work for the day.

I think that's it... if you have any other questions... please call or email me.

The GUARD LIST IS BEING SENT TODAY!  In order to enter, your name must be on the list.  I have added all newcomers to the Guard List!  If I should have forgotten you by error... ask the guard to call me.  My name and number are at the top of the Guard List.

See you SOON!!!

Another GREAT RETREAT planned!!!

WELL... as all of you know... Florence is still hanging around and making a mess of everything!

Our retreat in North Carolina at the Black Stallion was cancelled.... we even had to evacuate.  Thank God we didn't have a full house yet... !  The staff was there a day early and in the process of cooking, setting up the classroom, etc.  when we received the telephone call... in a matter of seconds our dreams were crushed.

So... we packed everything back up (that we had just unpacked) and tried contacting everyone that were all over the United States...some of them even traveling to us... and told them the news.  Needless to say - we all were holding back the tears as well as possible.

We had already prepared 15 chickens for barbecuing, made banana pudding, ice cream dessert, etc. and it all went bye-bye.

HOWEVER, we all managed to leave the island safely and we're doing our best to work on a reschedule!  So for those of you that were scheduled to attend... once we get a plan into place, we will contact each of you FIRST - then once we can open it up to our other quilters.

Lisa Bongean has many openings in her schedule next year … so keep your fingers crossed!

To continue on with the RETREATS... I wanted to share this one we have coming up!!!!

NEW...NEW...NEW...!

Hi everyone!!

We are so excited to share with you patterns from some of our favorite wool and embroidery designers.  You know how we love hand embroidery, wool applique, cute "critters", fun organizers/ bags, wool applique and MORE.  So we are going directly to the designer or wholesale supplier and bringing them to our website!

The main portion of our "home screen" will continue to be open for blog postings.   "Shopping" options are located on the right side of your screen.  Simply select the different options with your cursor/arrow and press the enter key.  The screen will change and take you right into the shopping mode!

We do use PayPal for our shopping cart.  However, you do NOT have to have a PayPal account.  When checking out, an option to pay with a debit or credit card will be available.  Sales tax(if applicable) and shipping will be charged to the transaction.

Our first artist that we have for you to take a peak at is a long time favorite of ours.

http://www.oldegreencupboard.com/p/blog-page.html

Bonnie Sullivan

All Through The Night
Bonnie Sullivan

Bonnie also designs fabric for Maywood Studio.  She specializes in the best flannels you will ever see.  When we had them in the store (Olde Green Cupboard) it was a fall line and they looked almost like woven wool.  Simply gorgeous.  Great quality, no pilling, soft, and washed/dried beautifully.

We are even more excited to have her BRAND NEW SPRING 2018 PATTERNS - straight from Spring Market!  You can be one of the first to get her patterns and start working on her gorgeous designs.

She's a genius.. and you'll understand what I mean when you see the patterns and embroidery lines are already printed on the background fabric! You'll have NO TRACING at all!  How about that?  Check out the sample below!

This is her NEW Needle and Thread pattern.  The background fabric is printed with not only the ruler fabric, but also the spool of thread and the embroidery lines.  You'll add the applique pieces and hand stitch on the embroidery lines.  PLUS... she has another surprise....!!  Many of her new patterns have laser cut applique pieces you can order.  OH MY... this is getting better and better !

http://www.oldegreencupboard.com/p/blog-page.html

Check this out... these are the pieces you will use with this project!  They are ready to adhere to your project and then stitch - by hand or machine.  The technique is your choice. Isn't that cool?
http://www.oldegreencupboard.com/p/blog-page.html

So... now it's time to move your eyes just to the right of where you are reading on this main screen.  At the top you will see:   SHOP - Bonnie Sullivan Patterns.  This is where you will be able to see all of the patterns we've chosen from her collection.

Hold on to your seat.... We even have her fabulous seasonal patterns!!!  We work on Christmas patterns, ornaments, and projects all year long.  Bonnie's are just to fabulous for you to NOT have the opportunity to order.  Order them NOW and begin your work.

Many of the projects give you the option to finish them into bowl fillers (ornies), pin cushions, or mount in a frame!    I'm doing all of my Christmas Bowl Fillers into the 4" x 6" black frames.  Those small frames are adorable tied onto the Christmas Tree as decorations.... or even onto packages with pretty ribbon.  What an extra "special gift" to make for your sewing or stitching friends for Christmas!  Order them now and you'll still have plenty of them to have them all ready for this Christmas.

I really like this style.  Once you have the pictures all finished and framed, tie cute, whimsical polka dot ribbon then you attach the frame to the tree limb.  You can click on the pictures and it will take you to websites to check out different 4" x 6" frames and ribbon.  I have found that these small frames are hard to find in the stores.... so I always order them on-line.  If you buy the ribbon with the wire in the edges, it is so much easier to form into a pretty, fluffy bow that stays!

So... Grab your  project case, needles, threads, scissors, and head to the iron!  Press everything in place and start stitchin!

Oh... first... wait...  make sure you order them from us first!  I'll pop them in the mail to you pronto!  Then... send us pictures when you're finished.  We'll make a "braggin' page" on our blog for all of you!

Keep watching your email for more Blog News!!!

Keep on stitchin' !!

What Great Ideas!!!

Hi Gang!!

I wanted to share a few GREAT IDEAS with you related to..... PLASTIC!!!

Have you ever seen or used the adhesive placemats?  They are more common with babies.... to use in restaurants on the high chair or table!   These are perfect to have around the house and to use when you are working on different projects.... using glue?  Painting?  Clay? ... anything that may make a nasty mess on your work surface... Use one or two... how ever many you need to cover your work surface...then simply peel away and toss when you are finished!

Do you have wee ones at home that like to color, use water color paint, colored pencils or markers... these are PERFECT!  No more worry about the mess on the table.

Here is my other plastic "love".... simple plastic shower caps.  OH MY GOSH... I use these for everything...   I cover bowls of food that go in the refrigerator.... when I cut my wool strips for my rug hooking, I put all of my wool strips down inside... it captures all of the "wool fuzz" in the bottom!   Sorters... yes I use them to sort items .... thread, floss, fabric strips... on and on!!!  Get yourself a package of them... then think of all the things you do daily.... how you can use them.  You will thank me.... I just know it!

There... you have it... two new ideas to use in your home and in your sewing studio!

I'm thinking of blogging about how to design your sewing studio with fun new looks.... how to take an item that is normally used in the home... and using that same item in your sewing studio and change the entire dynamics of it's use.  Does that sound interesting?    Of course... my first love is the "Farmhouse" look!   I think I may start there.... with the galvanized look.....

Stay tuned!

Gloria

There's a "gremlin" around here.....

Oh yes.... he's a crazy "gremlin".... he seems to send you all old posts from our blog!!!!

Who are you????    So sorry for the old blog posting....  I'll try to find this little fellow and tell him to

GET OUT OF TOWN!!

If you've never been to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.... you MUST VISIT.  We may even see some wild horses roaming the beaches.  It is amazing to see them and then to realize... they belong to no one... they eat and exist off the land.  So Cool.  If you can't stand it any longer and you want to come.... go to Olde Green Cupboard Website - Look for Black Stallion Retreat on the right side of the screen and GET SIGNED UP!
